Week 9

Hi my name is Alison and I took crappy pictures this week.  Lucky for you not a lot has changed!

The laundry is no longer a dumping ground!  (It has all moved to the guest room…)

The kitchen has gotten a few more decorations but that’s about it this week.  Have I told you about those chairs at the table?  They were on sale for 2 for $8 at a consignment store in town.  I plan to repaint them and to recover the upholstered seat but it’ll probably be a while before I get to that.

The hallway is still a hall but I really love that blue glow you can see from the guest room.

I hung towel racks in here this week.  I still want to hang beadboard on that wall with the towels so I hung the towel bar low enough that the holes will be covered when I finally get around to that project.  Also I know that bathmat is not white and everything else is.  I care, but not enough to switch it out.

Obviously I really stuck to my guns on that whole “no dogs on the bed” thing.

Initially I didn’t know what I was going to do with all that space on those shelves…yeah.  Some of those boxes and bins are empty….and some, like that little square one (nailpolish, files and remover) is overflowing.

Image

I was going to just show you this picture from the guest room.  But then I thought that would be lying-here’s the rest:

I guess if there is any good news to this disaster it’s that this is everything.  All my decorative, storage and craft stuff has made it into this room-now it just needs to be put away.

Did I tell you I got curtains for the living room?  They came during Week 8 but I don’t think I told you about them!

Image

I got them from Linens4Less.  I was skeptical because they were $15.99 per panel (rather than the $30 plus every where else) and I was afraid they would look cheap.  Turns out they’re awesome!  I love the honeycomb pattern and the light color so some of the wood work shines through at just the right angle.

Image

I went with dark hardware with chunky, pine cone looking finials that I have been coveting from Target.  Thanks to dear friends I had some Target gift cards and thanks to Target all their curtain hardware was on sale that week!  I scored these, a new front door mat and a bunch of solar lights for outside.  Thanks everyone!

I’m at the point of moving in where it’s the little things left.  And it’s not as much fun!

I promise that by next week my guest room will be usable for guests!  Someone come see me!

Thrift Store Finds

I was going to use a catchy Macklemore-type title for this post but I realized I’m just not that cool.  And I can’t change, even if I tried, even if I wanted to.  Okay, sorry.

Anyways I had some free time before an appointment yesterday so I decided to do some thrift shopping.  I went to my (old) favorite but was disappointed.  They don’t price anything and I hate asking.  For example I went about a year ago and saw an iron headboard that wasn’t priced so I asked a person walking around.  They said, “$50.00.”  So I staff shopped and asked the girl at the cash register and she said, “$7.00.”  SOLD!  It’s now in my bedroom.  My point is I feel like nobody there really knows what’s going on.  They had nothing I liked yesterday so I moved on to another store.

Here’s what I found:

Image

Yikes, really blurry!

The luggage rack was $10 and I plan to use it as a side table in the guest room with a wooden tray on the top.  The baskety tray was $2, the metal tray was $4 and the brand new Threshold from Target ceramic baskets were $3 each.

I knew I wanted to paint that tray for the guest room and figured I would use the light aqua from the living room or I would be boring and I would spray it white.

Image

But then I noticed the pattern and decided to do something crazy:

Image

I know I want some yellow in the guest room and thought this would be a fun place to start.  As I was painting I found myself getting lost in the pattern so I went through and pre-marked all the lines I wanted to be yellow.

Image

I liked the grain showing through so I decided to just do one coat of the yellow.  (The color is…yellow and I think the brand is Apple Crate (maybe barrel) Paints from Wal-Mart.)

Then I got even crazier:

Image

This color is Laguna, same brand of paint.

Image

I did two coats of the Laguna (a greeny teal) and decided that I liked leaving some of it unpainted.  I might live with it for awhile and decide to fill it all in but for now I really like it.

Since the paint and brush were in my craft closet already this project only cost me $2!  Now I’m on the hunt for a table for the other side of the bed to put this bad boy on!

Week 8-The Hall Bath

Image

I’m SO glad that purple is gone!  The pictures don’t seem that impressive (well after week 2 at least) but in person it’s so much better!  The paint is Olympic’s Cavalry-love the color but HATED the Olympic paint.  The rooms where I used Valspar went on in one coat and I had plenty of paint leftover.  The rooms where I used Olympic required several quotes (3+ in the guest room!) and multiple trips back to Lowe’s for more paint.  I tried to color match to Valspar but Lowe’s said they couldn’t.

Still to do in here:

  • Hang the bead board on the wall across from the toilet
  • Hang some art
  • Hang the towel bars
