Evolution of a doorway

I know this seems weird but looking back through pictures of the last 17 weeks I’m constantly surprised by what a big impact small changes can make.

Take this doorway between my kitchen and laundry room, for example:

Image

It looked like this for a long time.  Huge gaps around it that looked terrible and made me think spiders could come crawling out at any moment.

Image

So my dad filled in the gap and textured the wall.

Image

I spent about 15 minutes painting it and now it looks like this.

No more spider portal!

Week 17

Just a warning: I didn’t clean/pick up/hide anything before I took these picturesImage

Image

I’d like to kiss the person who created Killz and my mother, the person who put it on these walls. ūüėČ

Image

Yes folks, on the side there? ¬†That’s the kitchen table, stained and in it’s correct position!

The Christmas spirit found me over the weekend and I decided I wanted to make some stockings since I was hosting the family for Christmas this year. ¬†It’s too bad motivation didn’t find me along with the spirit though-if it had these stockings would have been sewn instead of hot glued together…

Image

Image

That weird square up there is another leaf wreath for my bedroom. ¬†I’m hoping to show you the finished product next week!

Image

Image

Image

Also I’ve become slightly obsessed with the show America Declassified. ¬†This episode was about airplane hijacker D.B. Cooper. ¬†Apparently I took this picture at just the wrong moment-I didn’t mean for his creepy police sketch eye to be staring at you-sorry!

Image

Bye bye Christmas tree-see you next year!

Image

Image

My little brother doesn’t read my blog (I know! Can you believe it??) so he doesn’t know that I’m going to ask him to hang the bead board in this bathroom while he’s here visiting this week. ¬†If you know him, don’t tell him. ¬†I want it to be a surprise. ūüôā

Image

That bed needs more pillows….and I would love a different duvet cover!

Image

Image

I’m working on some art for in here. ¬†These walls are looking sad!

Image

And I moved the garlands in my room.  I think I like them much more on this wall.

Image

Image

But now the wall above the bed is empty again.  sigh.

Image

I really need to patch and paint those holes.

Image

Image

I’m hoping Week 18 sees more art up in the bedrooms and that bead board in the bathroom! ¬†And Week 19 should have a finished laundry room! ¬†Can’t wait!

Laundry Room Phase I

I’m so grateful for my laundry room! ¬†If I didn’t have it all of this stuff:
Image

would have been all over my house during the construction weeks.

Now I’m ready for it to be a light, clean, uncluttered space.

You might remember that I’ve picked out paint and my dad has plans to build a bookcase in the place of the 1/2 wall but before that’s all done I wanted to show you what a difference a (two) coat of primer makes:

Image

Holy brightness!

Image

And here it is during the day!

And just because I love this kind of stuff here it is at Week 2 and at Week 17:

Image

I originally didn’t think the tan was that dark but notice the lights on in the picture on the left? ¬†It was like a cave in there with the lights out-even during the day!

The new colors will go up in the next week but I wouldn’t count on this place being cleaned up until Week 19 ūüôā

Laundry Room Plans

Here we go!

Image

Henry thinks the recycling bins are his toy boxes.  To solve this I think a bench built over them would keep him out but then also give me a place to sit as I put on/take off my shoes.

Image

Eventually I’ll get a washer and dryer…

Image

While we’re gussying the place up I think we should shorten these permanently and get rid of the zip ties.

Image

And now the paint! ¬†For the ceiling I’m doing a soft aqua green (Neon Mint from Valspar) and a creamy white (Honeymilk, also Valspar.) ¬†I knew what I wanted in here but wanted to be sure I had the right colors so I just got samples of these and painted up swatches. ¬†Before any more color goes up everything is getting a coat of Killz.

The current tan doesn’t seem dark on it’s own but after painting up these much lighter colors I’m getting really excited that this room will be clean and bright!

Image

And finally my dad came up with a new solution for the 1/2 wall. ¬†He’s making a bookshelf that will appear to be built in. ¬†It will give me more storage in here and also stabilize this wall.

This room has been horribly neglected because I just didn’t have any ideas. ¬†Now that there’s a plan I can’t wait to get it done!

Week 16

…or HOLY MOLY! ¬†It’s been 4 months!

Image

Image

The laundry room is still the same…but not for long!¬† Stay tuned-later this week I’ll show you what I have planned!

Image

I’m in love with my kitchen again!¬† I didn’t realize how nice it was to have a vent/light over the stove and cabinets next to it to set stuff on until I didn’t have them!¬† My wonderful parents bought me the cabinets for an early Christmas present and I couldn’t be happier!

Image

Image

I know the blue picture frames aren’t even.¬† Truth be told, I don’t own a level.¬† It’s probably time I get one.

Image

I finally decided to make this wall in my kitchen my “travel wall.”¬† I printed out a bunch of pictures from trips I’ve taken and popped them in these frames.¬† Also these frames are the same black frames that were once in my hallway, then in my bedroom.¬† I like them the best in here.

Image

Image

I’m sure you know that chair isn’t staying there.¬† I just moved it into the smallest space in my house to make room for the work being done in my kitchen.¬† Makes sense, right?

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

I don’t know why I do this.¬† I know exactly what I want and try to convince myself that I can live with something else.¬† I hated the smaller frames (so I painted them and moved them to my kitchen.)¬† I’m going to go with the larger IKEA frames and finally be happy!

Image

That top doily garland is a little wonky still so I’ll need to get up there and adjust it.¬† I still love the idea of this but I’m not thrilled with how it has turned out.¬† Any suggestions?

Image

Oops, sorry Prudie!  It looks like I interrupted her afternoon yoga.

After the laundry room I really don’t have any major projects left to do (until it’s warm enough to work outside…)¬† I’m feeling both sad and proud right now.¬† I’m thrilled with what a transformation I (we) have made in this house in only four months but I don’t know what I’m going to do with my time (and money) when all the projects are done!

GIANT thrift store finds!

I spent about 15 minutes thrift shopping today.

It was all I needed.

I found these:

Image

Image

These frames are humongous!

They’re so big it was hard to hold them both and open the car door!

What I’m saying is that I didn’t take any measurements so I don’t know exactly¬†big they are.

But believe me-they’re B I G!

Aside from being huge they also have really cool details:

Image

Image

They’re plastic and a horrible fake gold but I have plans for these frames!

One was $1.99 and the other was $2.00. ¬†I don’t know why one was worth one more cent than the other with tax I spent $4.32.
