One Man’s Trash

has become my treasure.

You see, a few weeks ago I noticed that someone in a house down the street from me was putting furniture out on their curb.  It started with a desk and then came a beat up entertainment center.  Then one night, on my way to the movies, I noticed a lawn mower, smoker, chairs and spreader (for fertilizer/seed) joined the broke down furniture.

I liked the chairs but was too scared to grab them in broad daylight.  My mom is usually the scavenger (thanks mom!) and I debated about calling her but had a movie to get to so I posted on Facebook.  My concern was that if I took them and they weren’t free I’d be a thief and end up in jail.  (Okay, maybe that’s a little dramatic, but still!)  I consulted with my Facebook friends and the friend who came to the movies with me and decided it was worth a closer look at the chairs.

So, in the cover of night my friend Denise and I saddled up next to the chairs and checked them out.  They were sturdy and just enough worn down that I could believe they were being given away.  Just to be safe though I went up and knocked on the door.  There was no answer so we loaded them in my Jeep and off we went.

I got home and put them on my back patio but didn’t really check them out closely until the next morning.

Image

They’re very comfortable and just begging for a makeover!

Image

My plan is to sand out the rough patches and paint them.  I’m leaning towards a bright yellow but am also considering orange and turquoise but I’d love your suggestions!

Need To-dos

When I moved in I had ideas of what I wanted to do.  Now that I’ve been living there for almost 6 months that list has fallen to the wayside in favor of the need to do list.

For example, it’s Spring here in Colorado (yay!) which means mud.  Mud everywhere.

Image

Including on the side of my house.

Image

This end of my driveway used to be yard (remember those sheds??) so it’s not packed down the way the rest of my driveway is.  After one long day of work I pulled into my driveway and got stuck.  Completely stuck.  So stuck that I had to put my car in 4 Low and rock it forwards and backwards to get it out.

Need to do #1: pave the driveway.

Next up is my closet.  I was thrilled that someone in my house’s history decided to put a walk in closet in here.  I just wish they had also decided to put in some flooring over the plywood.

Image

Need to do #2: find an inexpensive (because who really goes in my closet…besides all of you?) flooring option for in here

And finally

Image

I’m sure you’re scratching your head right now wondering what I could possibly want to do in here but let me give you a hint:

Image

That look on his face?  Shady as heck.  This face says, “oh please let me outside!  I promise I won’t run away!”  This face lies.

So I need a door.

Image

Need to do #3: replace that window with a door so I can let Henry directly out to the back yard.

Sure I still want base boards in every room.  And a gas insert in my living room.  And for my basement to be finished.  And a million other things.  But what I want more is a driveway that doesn’t try to swallow my car, a way to let my dog out without him running away and a floor that doesn’t give my feet splinters.

I’ll keep you updated.

Paper Banner

First of all, I know, I know.  Technical difficulties and a super busy work week kept me from here all of last week.  But now I’m back so let me try to catch you up on what I’ve been doing.

As part of my resolution to do something crafty everyday I went in search of a project that could go somewhere in my house and use some of my massive scrapbooking paper stash.

I came across a darling paper banner and decided my kitchen was the perfect place for it.

So I picked out a bunch of papers:

Image

Found something to use as a template:

Image

That’s a foam stamp (just under 3″ long) that I traced for the rectangle and then I just free handed the little triangle to cut out of the bottom.

Image

Then I cut them all out and punched holes in the top of each one

Image

Then I strung them all together.  It was at this point that I realized I needed to cut out a couple more flags so I could have a symmetrical banner.  If you’re not OCD about things like this then just carry on stringing them.  I used a waxed string but really wanted something chunkier.  This will probably end up being replaced with some jute or thicker twine.

Image

I’m so happy with my little under an hour project!  I like how the colors tie in to the curtains and I love that it adds a little whimsy to that wall.

Image

I’m cranking out posts and banking them like crazy today so that I won’t ever be caught in another post free week again!  Thanks for sticking around!

My IKEA List

I’m very excited about the very busy weeks I have coming up.  First, on the second, I have my Oscar Party (info coming soon!) then on the 7th I’m cruising over the mountains for my very good friend’s baby shower.  While in the big, big, big city (Denver) I have a long, long, long, long list of things I want to do.

First my brother is taking me on his “thrift store circuit” around Boulder and Denver.  I’m sure you can imagine how excited I am for that!  I also need to hit up the newly opened Trader Joe’s and I want to hit up at Home Goods.  I also, of course, will probably spend so much time in IKEA that I have no time left for TJ’s or Home Goods (but let’s hope not!)

Of course, worked into my crazy plan to hit up all these places I also plan to spend some QT with my brother, his girlfriend and my mama-to-be friend and eat some delicious food.  I’m sure I’ll also miss Henry and Prudie like crazy while I’m gone.

As I have a lot to get done in three short days I have made a list of things I want to pick up while I’m at IKEA.  Here’s what I’ve got so far:

RIBBA Picture ledge IKEA The picture ledge makes it easy to vary your favorite motifs as often as you like.

1.  The RIBBA picture ledge in both lengths (22 3/4″ and 45 1/4″) which I plan to install along the top of the bead board in my bathroom.

RIBBA Frame IKEA You can enhance and add depth to your picture by using the accompanying mount when you frame it.

2.  The RIBBA frame in medium brown to replace the blue frames in my laundry room

MAGGA Basket IKEA Each basket is woven by hand and is therefore unique.

3.  MAGGA baskets for the bookshelf in my laundry room.  I’m hoping that this pattern closely matches the patterns on the baskets I already have.

RISKORN Plant pot IKEA A plastic inner pot makes the plant pot waterproof.

4.  I think the RISKORN plant pot will be cute in my guest room

ERSÄTTA Block candle holder IKEA

5.  I want a couple of these ERSATTA block candle holders in a few different sizes for my mantle

TEJN Faux sheepskin IKEA The faux sheepskin is super soft, warm and cozy. Ideal as a rug or draped across your favorite armchair.

6.  And of course, Prude needs this TEJN faux sheepskin to sleep on in front of the window in my bedroom!

Craft Table

Why have I been lugging my craft stuff in and out of the guest room?  This table in this place is PERFECT!  I can’t wait to start making stuff there!

Pinterest Party #1

This party was so easy and so fun that I want to do one every month!

Image

As the hostess I gathered all the supplies and set them out.  We decided as a group on the project which was to Mod Podge paper onto the backs of glass plates.  Sounds exciting, right?Image

Image

I asked everyone to make a food or drink that they found on Pinterest and enough copies of the recipe for everyone to take one home.  My friend Genessee took it one step further and made us all these awesome chalkboard paint dipped wine glasses to go along with her drink!

Image

Image

Image

We had so.much.food!  Taco Cups (Michelle,) Saltine Toffee (Me,)  Sausage Cheese Balls (Me,) Bacon Ranch Mix (Barb.)  Not shown here are 5 Minute Fudgy Cake (Denise) and Mini Cheesecakes (Genessee.)

Image

Barb took hers one step further and bagged up the dry ingredients, packaged them in burlap and gave us each one with the recipe attached!

Image

These cheesecakes were delicious and adorable!  My co-worker pointed out that “Pin Me” could have a naughtier meaning than what was intended.

Image

Image

Image

I got enough plates for everyone to do two and I think we could have sat there all night making them if I had enough plates!

I’m already trolling Pinterest looking for our next project!

Week 24

I missed Week 23.  I’m sorry.  Truth me told, I didn’t even try to take pictures…whoops!

Laundry Room

Image

Image

This corner is better but not great.  The extra stuff did go to the basement but I’m still wishing for something to put over those recycling bins to make them less of an eye sore.

Image

Neither of these rugs are new.  The door mat was in my entryway but matched this room better so I moved it in here.  The flowered rug I got when I lived in Albuquerque (from World Market) and it’s been hanging over my fence for the last month.  I finally got around to cleaning it up and brought it in here.  It’s too thick to put right in front of the door but luckily I think it looks good with the kitchen colors and it provides one last place to wipe feet before going into the main part of the house.

Kitchen

The only thing I did in here this week was hang up that Kauai print.

I didn’t realize how much I would love a rug here until I got one (err, two.)  I love this pattern and the color is perfect so I bought two rugs ($8.77 each) from Wal-Mart and plan to sew them together to make them runner length.

I still haven’t put the bead board up.  Yet.  I will.  Soon. Really.

Guest Room

I’m not sold on this lamp here.  I moved it from my living room (where the orange lamp is cute) to here and I just don’t think it works.  It’s too big and too dark.  I think it’s going into the yard sale pile.
