Guest Room Progress

Just so you guys don’t think it’s all fun and weed eating around here, I wanted to show you that I’ve been plugging away in the guest room.  Remember when it looked like this?

Well now it’s better:

Image

The orange tape is gone along with the brown duvet cover and that headboard!  Now I’m sorry I didn’t get it done sooner!

Image

The bookshelf is under the picture frames now

Image

And this odd thrift store plant stand is in the corner with, surprise!, a succulent.

What you see on the edge of the bed there is a rug I’m working on for in here.

Image

Okay, so the bed’s not perfect but it’s getting there!

Image

I stuck my $3 ottoman under the round mirror and a couple hooks.  I’m going to leave the legs as is and I’m looking for some cool fabric to cover the top with.

Image

I have 10 of these gold frames (Target clearance for 50 cents a piece!)  I’m thinking I might like them in two rows of 5 above the bed but I’m still not sure.  I like the golds in here but the bright yellow isn’t working for me anymore and I think it needs to be more subtle.  That banner will more than likely come down and I’m thinking about changing the curtains.

Image

Image

My craft closets came out better than I expected!

Image

This light fixture is terrible.  I have a ceiling fan in the basement that I hope to hang in here.

Image

I hate this door and it’s ugly brass knob.  Before my first year in this house is up, I want to replace them with something that looks older.

Whew!  I’ll have a house sitter here in June while I’m at a wedding so I’m determined to have this room cozy, comfortable and mostly done by the time she stays here.

Legit Adult

Guess what I did today?  One guess:

Image

Yesterday my dad got me an electric weed eater.  I’ve never used any kind of weed eater so I was nervous.  Until I used it.

Image

Now I want to cut everything!  I trimmed around the roses and fence in the back yard.

Image

And I got all the clumps of weeds and crab grass in the front.  The thing that surprised me is that just cutting all that junk made me love my lawn!  It already looks more lush and pretty!

Image

There’s still more to do but the battery died.

Is it weird that weed eating made me feel like a legitimate adult?  Will the novelty ever wear off?  Let’s hope not!

I hope everyone had a nice Memorial Day!

Pop of Color

This is the front of my house today:

Image*yawn*  My yard is greening up and that Clematis is growing like crazy and my mom is working on moving the old bricks to the front to make this cute little seating area under the window.  All of that is great but I’m bored.  Everything looks so washed out and blah.  So, I’m going to paint my front door.

Image

I’m going to leave the screen door white and just paint the actual door (and leave the trim on the door white too.)  After hours of deliberating I’ve chosen a color.  Can you guess which one? (all Benjamin Moore colors)

Hale Navy:

So which do you think I picked?  Stay tuned-I can’t wait to reveal it!

PS-this is my first blog post FROM HOME!  Wooohooo!

Little Changes

Let me tell you a secret:  I haven’t had internet at my house since I moved in.  I don’t have a good reason other than that I thought it was going to be an hours long installation and didn’t want to be stuck sitting at home waiting for them to come and connect me to the World Wide Web.  Then, last week, fed up with the second satellite box not working in my bedroom, I finally called up my provider to get it fixed.  I casually mentioned that I may be interested in their internet services and imagine my surprise when they told me that they didn’t even have to come inside the house to hook me up.  I was sold and so, this Thursday, I will finally have internet.

For the last 8 months I’ve taken tons of pictures and then gone to my parents’ house for a marathon session of editing pictures and writing posts and saving them so I could easily post them from my phone during the week.  I’m excited to have internet because now I can take pictures and edit them each day instead of plowing through 100s of them in an afternoon!

Because I had to take a bunch of pictures at once I often found myself with gems like these:

Image

For some reason, I thought moving the decorations around in my bathroom would make for a much more interesting post than it actually did.  But, because I was trying to stockpile, I edited them and really wanted to use them!

Image

I’m sure you notice the frames have moved places and that I added another row of rope around the outside of the mirror (and the three pieces to cover the seam) but really, nothing else has changed in here.

Image

I really want to display some sea glass in that empty green frame but I can’t find an adhesive that doesn’t look terrible through the glass.  Any suggestions?

Come Thursday I’m so excited to show you the guest room (spoiler-with the headboard!) and the little project my mother and I have started in the front yard!

The Guest Room

I’m only posting this because I need some accountability.  I’m showing you these pictures to finally get myself motivated to tackle this room and I think showing you my shame will do that.

I don’t know why I call this room the guest room these days.  It’s turned into the place where I dump everything I don’t have a place for:Image

Image

Prudie loves it though because she can hide behind all the piles :).

This mess happened because I decided I needed to clean out the two closets in this room.  One was mostly empty while the other was bursting at the seams with all my craft stuff.  I also wanted to move the picture ledges I hung over the bed (hence the orange tape) to another room.Image

Image

I started by pulling almost everything out of that corner closet and separating the fabric and yarn from everything else.  I put this off because I thought I needed to buy a rod for this closet so I could hang things.  Imagine my surprise to find one tucked behind that white board!

Image

Getting my fabric out of bins freed up so much space!  I’ve already used 100% more fabric this week than I have the whole time I’ve lived in this house.

Image

An equally bothersome but not at all organization related problem is this curtain rod.  Nobody goes in this freaking room-how can it be falling down??  Hopefully this will be an easy fix…I just need to find my drill…

ImageYou might remember this bed frame from a post, oh, 8 months ago.  It used to be bright blue and hang out underneath the apple tree in the backyard.  Painting that chair inspired me to finish the frame so I’m excited to get this room cleaned up and put back together and finally show you how awesome this baby looks in the room!

I’ve been slowly chipping away at this room so I’m hoping to have an “it’s clean and put back together” post for you next week!

Remember When?

Over the last few months I’ve put a lot of time into the outside of my house.  Remember those chairs? The roses?  My peonies and chicks and hens?  Here’s where they are now.

Let’s start with the roses:

Image

This guy was transplanted by my mother from my front yard last fall.  I have no idea what color it is yet so I really can’t wait until it blooms!

Image

Image

As you can see, two of them are going crazy.

Image

I hope those other two catch up soon!

My peonies and chicks and hens are doing ok…

Image

Every other day I look at these and think they’re goners.  Today, I think they’re going to make it.

Image

The gladiolus bulbs are coming in great and are dwarfing those peonies.  The peonies are still alive so I’m not going to mess with them, but I’m a little sad that they’re still so small!

Image

(yes, I know I need to weed)

This week saw a huge improvement in my tree lawn.  I love the tree stumps and wanted to put flower pots on them but I live on such a busy street I was worried that they’d get kicked over.  My dad had a brilliant solution and we screwed the pots into the stumps, now they’re not going anywhere!

Image

Image

Okay, I didn’t get enough dirt to fill the pots so the flowers are below the rim right now.  I’ll be so happy if they grow up and spill out over the tops.  If they don’t, I’ll know better for next year!

Image

And finally, the chairs!  Well, right now it’s just one chair but it’s painted!

Image

Oh boy, this was a pain!  I started out rolling the flat parts but gave that up pretty quickly.  I found the best tool for the job was a flat craft brush that allowed me to get into the cracks between the slats.

Image

The color is Valspar Fresh Mist and it’s so cheery and bright!  This chair (and one small project) took half a quart so I wish I would have primed the chair first.  That wood was dddddrrrrrryyyyyy!

Image

It’s been so exciting to see things grow.  I’ve planted some onions, beets, carrots and lettuce and I’m anxiously waiting for them to sprout!

Happy Mother’s Day!

My dad does huge projects in my house (think replacing doors and patching holes!)  Projects that everyone notices.  My mom, on the other hand, has devoted just as much time making my house beautiful, just more subtly.

For example:

Image

She helped me hang fishing line for the Clematis to climb up

Image

And she painted 99% of the walls in my house

Image

And she weeded my front yard and built this pretty stone path

Image

Image

And put together these cute little beds (and transplanted that rhubarb.)

And that’s just the tip of the iceberg!

Thanks for all your help mom!

Love,

-A
